HUS - Workspace Modernization and a Five-Year Transformation Roadmap

Access Solutions Oy partnered with HUS in a comprehensive workspace modernization initiative aimed at improving desktop infrastructure efficiency, strengthening security, and delivering significant long-term cost savings.

At the core of the engagement was the development of a five-year transformation roadmap. The project included a detailed assessment of the existing workstation environment and the design of a transition strategy toward a modern architecture based on thin clients and Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). Both technical feasibility and total cost of ownership (TCO) were carefully evaluated, while ensuring business continuity throughout the transformation.

Key Areas of the Project

• Comprehensive analysis and optimization of the workstation and endpoint infrastructure
• Financial modeling demonstrating substantial cost savings, including up to 85% reduction in endpoint replacement costs
• Extension of endpoint device lifecycles from 4–5 years to as much as 7–10 years
• Migration toward a centralized, secure VDI and cloud-based workspace model
• Analysis of an application portfolio consisting of more than 1,000 applications, including compatibility assessments
• Evaluation and strategic selection of endpoint device options
• Modernization of authentication and identity management solutions through modern access and identity technologies

The planning phase also addressed specialized requirements, including latency-sensitive and GPU-intensive applications. To support these workloads, a hybrid architecture was defined, combining on-premises and cloud-based capacity to achieve optimal performance and flexibility.

The outcome was a phased and practical implementation model that enables a controlled transition without service disruptions while supporting HUS’s strategic objective of building a modern, secure, and cost-efficient workspace environment.
